ESO Game Tweaks
Hello all, this is a quick article for anyone looking for more performance from their machine, anyone who has had performance issues with Gaming in general, those with FPS (Frames per second) problems in ESO or for those who haven’t done any System maintenance recently. Many of the problems people encounter whilst gaming can be diagnosed by a process of elimination. Sometimes you find the solution is upgrading certain hardware components. First let’s find out if your system meets the game’s Minimum requirements.
The Elder Scrolls Online Minimum Requirements
CPU: Dual Core 2.0 GHz or equivalent processor
RAM: 2 GB
OS: Windows XP 32-bit
Video Card: DirectX 9.0 compliant video card with 512MB of RAM (NVIDIA GeForce 8800 / ATI Radeon 2600 or better)
Sound Card: Yes
Free Disk Space: 60 GB
Can I Run it? is the perfect tool here, by Systeminformationlabs, to find out if your machine is up to the task of running the game. Simply visit the website, searching for Elder Scrolls Online, install the detection applet and it will determine how well you can play the game.
ESO Game Tweaks
Location: /My Documents/Elder Scrolls Online/live/ for EU or NA Server.
This file holds some basic variables which are loaded when you load the game through the Launcher or via the exe. A few changes to settings in here can help make life a bit easier:
SET LuaMemoryLimitMB “64” – This is set to 64 by default. Change it to “256” and you shouldn’t have problems with LUA running out of memory.
SET SkipPregameVideos “1” – Set to 1 to skip the Intro Movies when you launch the game and go straight to the Login page change
SET HIGH_RESOLUTION_SHADOWS “0” – Default setting will set the value of this command at “1”; you need to change this to “0”. This setting reduces the amount of resolution that goes into producing shadows for in-game objects. Reducing this number will actually increase performance and add a degree of realism to the game.
SET GPUSmoothingFrames “0” – Also set at “1” by default. This needs to be changed to “0” as well.
SET RequestedNumWorkerThreads “0” – This is set at default to “-1” and needs to be adjusted to “0”. This will limit the number of Multi-thread jobs the game is able to process at one time, thereby reducing stutter and FPS drops.
SET GraphicsDriver.7 “D3D11” – this needs to be set to “D3D11”
Make sure you save & exit the Usersettings.txt after making any of these changes.
Having problems with some weird pink textures on Objects, Gear and some NPCs? This file, ShaderCache.cooked, is located in the same directory as Usersettings.txt. Close the game and the Launcher and then delete this file. It will be remade when the game is launched so don’t worry.
Circonians Addon Selector
Anyone who does PvP or Trials knows how intensive some fights can get, but at the same time Addons are awesome. The more Addons you add to your LUA memory the more the scripting language has to calculate and/or display every second. But turning addons on & off everytime you transition from crafting to fighting can be a chore. Not any more with Circonians Addon Selector.
It allows you to save different Profiles for different situations. Simply turn on which Addons you want on whilst Crafting, Enter a name and Save. I have 3 main profiles I use. Crafting, Normal & Raids. Crafting has Craftstore, Master Merchant, Multicraft etc. basically most of my addons. Normal has quite a few small Addons along with FTC and S’rendarr. Raids has just FTC and S’rendarr enabled. Having alot less Addons active whilst fighting really does help and this makes that easier.
PC System Maintenance
You don’t have to be a computer wizard to keep your System in good working condition, there are many third-party Free Programs which can help with just a click of a button. So let’s look at a few quick ways to help your system perform at it’s best.
Remove Unnecessary/Unwanted Programs
First of all, you should have a clear out of your currently installed Applications in Windows Control Panel > Uninstall a Program. It’s good to have at least 10% Free space on each Hard drive that you use regularly. There will be many programs you haven’t used in a very long time or unwanted Programs (such as Toolbars, desktop widgets, theme managers) which can contain spyware or adware. Sort by Size or sort by the Installed On headers to see which Programs take up the most Hard drive space and which you might not need.
Enable all Processor Cores & Remove Startup Programs
Windows System Configuration tool is accessed by pressing the Windows Key or Start button and typing System Configuration. When it opens click on the Boot header and then Advanced Options. The screen on the right will appear. Tick Number of Processors and change the value to the highest value.
Next click on the Startup tab. When you start Windows, there are many applications and services that run automatically. Overall performance can be noticeably improved by stopping all of the unnecessary programs that bog down your PC and by running Windows without any third-party services. Every program that is ticked loads up as you Login to Windows so disable any you don’t absolutely need.
Remove Temporary files & Registry errors
CCleaner is a quick and easy to use program which makes your computer faster, more secure and more reliable. It removes cookies, temporary files and various other unused data that clogs up your operating system. This frees up valuable hard disk space allowing your system to run faster. Removing this data also protects your anonymity meaning you can browse online more securely. The built in Registry Cleaner fixes errors and broken settings to make your computer more stable.
Update Windows, Programs & Drivers
There are a few Applications that depend on other Applications being installed for them to function properly. Many of them automatically update and Windows Update can be set to auto-update also. To check Press the Windows Key or Start button and type Windows Update. The window that appears will show if you have any Updates available to download.
For those of you unsure if you have the latest Applications you can check out the links below.

To update your Graphics Drivers you will have to know whether your using on-board Graphics, an Nvidia or an AMD Graphics Card. To check, Press the Windows Key or Start button and type System Information. Click on Components and then Display. The Name item will hopefully give you this information.

Defragment your Hard Drive
This can take quite some time depending on how often you defragment, how large your Hard Drive is, and how fast your machine is. SmartDefrag from IOBit is one of the best non-windows default defragmentation Programs you can download for Free. Download it, Analysis your drives, De-frag & Optimize. Easy, but again can be an overnight job. SSD Drives do not need De fragmenting.
Power, Animations and 3D settings.
Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 offer animations for minimizing and maximizing windows and fading menus. However, if you’re a gamer, this can interfere with your experience, so you should turn them off. Right-click on “Computer,” and select “Properties.” You’ll find all of the animations settings under “AdvancedPerformanceSettings.”
Also in Nvidia Control Panel & AMD Display Control, go to 3D settings and click the Default setting and Apply. Nvidia Control Panel users make sure Power Management Mode is on Prefer Maximum Performance.
Next go to Windows Control panel, Power Options and select High performance plan.
Game Booster aims to get the most out of your system, changing the settings so it can run games better. It works by updating hardware drivers, downloading essential gaming tools, tweaking system settings for gaming, defragmenting game directories, temporarily shutting down background processes, cleaning RAM, and intensifying processor performance.
Sometimes the problem is your system is overheating and unfortunately you won’t know this unless you test with a program such as HWMonitor. If your system is running with a CPU temp of higher than 60-70 degrees, and your GPU (Graphics Card) is running at 70+ degrees then your system may be running very hot during games. Standard temperatures can be as low as 30-35 degrees on the CPU and 40-50 degrees on the GPU.
HWMonitor is a hardware monitoring program that reads PC systems main health sensors :
- CPU temperature, voltage, power consumption and utilization.
- Mainboard voltages, temperatures, fans speed.
- GPU voltage, temperature, utilization.
- HDD temperature.
